What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a tooth cap or cover that can be placed over the top of a tooth to hide damage from infection or trauma.
Crowns are one of the most common dental restorations, with thousands of people receiving them every year. They are safe, durable, and made of high quality material. Best of all, they look and feel like your natural teeth.
The Benefits of Dental Crowns
Crowns cover up permanent damage or wear your teeth have sustained and give you back your natural, full smile. They can restore functionality to a section of your mouth and help prevent the spread of infection or decay. Crowns also protect weak teeth from breaking. If the tooth has already broken, they can hold the little pieces secure and keep the tooth intact.
The Dental Crown Process
The dental crown procedure usually begins with x-rays. We’ll check the roots of the tooth in question to make sure no root canals or other cleansing procedures need to be performed before the crown is installed. Once we’ve determined the gums are healthy and ready to receive the crown, we will numb the area around the afflicted tooth and file it down, so the crown will fit on top of it.
Once your tooth has been smoothed down to the right size, we will take an impression of it using a putty or paste. You will be fitted with a temporary crown while your permanent one is constructed in our lab. Depending on the material of the crown, this process could take up to a few weeks. You will come back for a second appointment when the permanent crown is completed.
